Origin: England
Height: 16.38 - 17.55 inch
Weight: 35.2 - 50.6 lbs

Breed history:

It has the same origins as the other Spaniels. It was developed together with the Cocker Spaniel, but it is less spread.

Description:

It is a medium-sized dog, strong and built for work and resistance, with a long rather than tall body. The muzzle is not too wide and long, with a big nose that has the same colour as the fur. The eyes are quite big, almond-shaped, chestnut or dark brown. The ears are medium-sized, wide, placed low, drooping close to the head and covered with rich, long, fringy hair. The tail is straight or a bit curved, erect but not above the backline or it can be a bit curved and covered with silky fringes. It can be docked short. The fur has medium length, thick, glossy, waterproof, smooth or a bit wavy, silky hair that is shorter on the head and thicker on the chest, belly, back of the legs and lower part of the tail forming fringes. The coat can be: dark red, yellow brownish, mahogany, black with or without white patches on the chest and neck.

Personality:

It is an agile, active, intelligent, tenacious, skillful, playful dog but can be a little stubborn. It is affectionate, sensitive and devoted to the family, but especially to one person. It is gentle and patient with children, but if it is teased it can become aggressive. If it was socialized from an early age with other dogs and other animals it will have no problems when it grows up. Generally, it is pretty friendly even with strangers and quite noisy.

Grooming:

The coat must be brushed in order to keep its neat look, and trimmed by hand 3-4 times per year. Excess hair grown between the footpads and from the ears must be removed, keeping them clean.

Living conditions:

This dog is resistant to bad weather, but can also adapt to apartment life if it gets the daily exercise it needs, having a pretty high level of activity. That's why it is recommended to an active, loving and sportive type family because it can become nervous if it doesn't receive any attention. Its hunting instinct is well developed and it will have the tendency to leave its master's side in order to chase interesting scents, or it can leave the yard if it isn't well-fenced. It has skills for field sports, it likes long walks, running, playing and swimming. It needs training and socialization.

Training:

This dog is intelligent, sensitive to the voice of its master and that's why there will be no problems with the training. With a patient, consistent, well-balanced and gentle attitude, the wanted results can be achieved.

Usefulness:

First of all it is a good hunter, especially on the field, but also a sensitive and affectionate companion.
