Breed history: Regarding its origin there are many suppositions. It is certain that its ancestor is the Tibetan Mastiff. During the 19th century, this breed spred with the help of  French, German and English fishermen. It is famous for rescuing people from drowning. It was loved and praised by the poets Burns and Byron, who said about it that it has all the human qualities, but non of its flaws.

Description: It is a large-sized, strong, vigorous, dog that impresses with its great strength and its working power. It has a big, broad head, with a big, prominent muzzle that has big, thick, drooping lips. The eyes are medium-sized and hazel. The ears are small and round-ended. The tail is big, broad, powerful and kept low at rest. The toes are connected by a interdigital membrane that helps it swim. The fur is double-layered, thick, waterproof, thick and of medium length. It can be as black as pitch, brown or grey. There are black with white varieties named Landseer, in the memory of the artist Edwin Landseer, who painted Queen Victoria's favorite dog.

Personality: It has an exceptional mild, endearing and docile temper. It is an intelligent, sociable, well- balanced and confident dog that rarely barks. Loyal and affectionate with its master and his family, protective and friendly with children, it is also friendly with other dogs, other animals and even with strangers if they don't have bad intentions.

Grooming: This dog's fur should be brushed regularly, not to get tangled.

Living Conditions: It is a dog resistant to weather changes, which feels best outdoors, with a loving master. One does not require too much experience to raise this dog, but should take into consideration the financial needs of such a dog. It needs socialization and training.

Training: It is an easy to train dog, because it is intelligent and obedient and good results can be obtained if a friendly and calm voice is used. The training must be well-balanced and consistent. It needs exercise. It loves swimming a lot.

Usefulness: It is a great savior of drowning people and a great work partner for fishermen. It is also used as a watchdog for the house and for guarding children. It is a pleasant companion dog.
